This video shows images and clips of "Thinspo" tips and tricks for women who want to change their bodies to fit more of the "ideal" image. Being admired through your physical image turns to being
sexy, beautiful, and successful. |
The "Voice" of Pro Ana comes into one's head to turn into an obsession. The video above explains and shows examples of Ana's voice that takes over your whole body and manipulates you into thinking your fat and feeling guilty about eating. There are forces that come about and construct their daily lives.
This video portrays a voice that wants to turn people away because it is "wrong". In conclusion, the video has failed for the audience because the dark side of Ana is actually bringing in women to fall into Ana's trap. When this happens, Ana is happy. When women turn away from her, Ana get's angry. |
*Control*
Being thin is about be able to control your life. Humans lack a sense of control.
..Feeling Lost
Drifting Through Life John Berger argues a woman's presence expresses her own attitude to herself, and defines what can and cannot be done to her. The voice of Ana comes into play when a woman struggles with eating. The voice will overcome the woman and manipulate her mind to listen to Ana. It is a cult-like situation where the mind completely lacks control and obeys until the person snaps out of the dangerous trap that Ana brings women into. When that happens, Ana wins. When they "snap" out of it, Ana loses.
Dealing with Pro-Ana can cause these thoughts to occur throughout their minds every second. Many women turn to Anorexia for their solution. Feeling powerless and lacking a sense of control can overcome their minds. Weight is something that they can control, and they need that focus because they don't think they can control anything else in their life. Weight loss resorts to a sense of accomplishment.

Waiting for something to change
Not knowing what I want to be.. |
*Perfection*
Fitting the Image to avoid public ridicule
Pro-Ana girls deal with the obsession of being "perfect". Their appearance is something that they will always be a motive. Pro-Ana girls do not live in their own bodies but become aware of their bodies appear in the eyes of boys. They are aware of being looked at and desired by men, but they do not accept their reflection in the eyes of others as a way of life.
In North America, women are given the message at a very young age that in order to be happy and successful, they must be thin. We are surrounded images of models and actresses that appear on the front cover of all fashion magazines. Thousands of teenage girls are starving themselves this very minute trying to attain what the fashion industry and media considers to be the “ideal” figure. The average model weighs 23% less than the average woman. Maintaining a weight that is 15% below your expected body weight fits the criteria for anorexia, so most models, according to medical standards, fit into the category of being anorexic. Teenagers need to realize that society’s ideal body image is not achievable. The photos we see in magazines are not real either. Many people don’t realize that those photos have gone through many touch ups and have been air-brushed to make the models look perfect. Teenagers striving to attain society’s unattainable ideal image will just end up increasing their feelings of inadequacy. |
*Social Acceptance*
Being skinny is accepted as beautiful; Being fat is disgusting.
Skinny is successful; Fat is failure
Being thin is the ultimate beauty. Being skinny is accepted as beautiful; Being fat is disgusting. A Pro-Ana girl goes through experiences daily such as;
a dread of social situations obsession and intense self awareness in social situations avoidance of social contact extreme self doubt rigid judging about social behavior self recrimination about ones own behavior in social situations emotional withdrawal as a way of feeling safe in social situations. Anorexia is a great disguise. It can look like natural shyness or modesty. Anorexia often maintains a quiet, status quo state. |
A woman's image is the drive of women to look at themselves being watched by men.
John Berger argues that women have to survey everything she is and everything she does because of how she appears to others; ultimately how she appears to men. It is of crucial importance for what is normally thought of as the success of her life.
